At Aurora Public Library, we're passionate about celebrating the voices, talents, and passions of the amazing teens in our community. Each month, we highlight a local teen to learn more about who they are, what inspires them, and how they stay curious, creative, and connected.
We're excited to introduce our very first Teen of the Month: Thomas Tran, a Grade 11 student at Country Day School. Thomas has been a dedicated teen volunteer and a familiar face in many of our teen programs.
Tell us about yourself!
I enjoy music and hanging out with friends - though I don't have much free time right now! When I do, I love staying engaged in activities that allow me to learn and grow.
What do you like about the library?
I like that the library offers a quiet space to work on personal projects, schoolwork, or just to think. The staff are friendly and know each other well, which creates a welcoming atmosphere.
What's your favorite book?
Hamlet by William Shakespeare. I enjoy reading old English, and the characters really resonate with me. The themes of loyalty and trust, and the inner struggle of the characters - makes it a good read.
Any advice you'd like to share with other teens?
Put yourself out there and don't be afraid to try new things. We often second-guess ourselves - whether it’s attending an event, doing homework, or going to the gym. Just do it! You never know what you'll gain from the experience.
Got any reading tips?
Start with a topic or genre that genuinely interests you. And don't be shy to ask someone for book recommendations. You can ask anyone from the library!
What are your future plans?
I'm planning to study Computer Science at the University of Toronto. I've always loved math and working with numbers. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, I want to be part of creating tools and innovations that help others. As someone who walks with prosthetic legs, I believe AI and technology can pave the way for inventions that improve lives - mine included.
What's your favorite quote?
“And what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may in fact be the first steps of a journey.” This is from Lemony Snicket.
