Overdrive FAQ

  • cloudLibrary will remain available until Saturday February 4, 2023.  However, as of December 31, 2022, customers will no longer be able to place holds on material in cloudLibrary.  Customers will still be able to borrow items until February 4th.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to transfer your holds from cloudLibrary to OverDrive.  To make the transition smoother, we will purchase copies of items on hold in cloudLibrary for OverDrive so that customers will be able to place holds in OverDrive as of January 9th. We recommend that you make a list of your holds in cloudLibrary and place holds on those titles in OverDrive before February 4th.

  • Sometimes you can't borrow a title immediately; usually because another user has already borrowed it or the title hasn't been released yet. If the title's not available, you may be able to place a hold on that title and be notified by email when it's available. You can place up to 10 holds in OverDrive.

When your hold becomes available, you'll receive a notification. You have 72 hours to borrow the hold, cancel it or have it delivered later if you're not ready to read it.  Delivering a hold later means you stay at the front of the wait list, but pass the current copy to the next person in line.

Once per hold, if you take no action within the 72 hour pickup window:

    • The "deliver after seven days" option will be automatically applied at the end of the 72-hour pickup window.
    • You'll receive the next available copy of the title.
    • The current copy will go to the next person in line.

If you take no action a second time, your hold will be canceled automatically.

  • You must have a valid Aurora Public Library card and PIN to check out eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines on OverDrive. York Region residents who wish to use our digital resources and services can sign up in person or online

You can have up to 10 titles checked out at any given time.  The default lending period for eBooks and eAudiobooks is 14 days.  Please note that eMagazines can be checked out for 21 days and do not count toward your checkout limit.

Materials will automatically be returned at the end of the checkout period.  It is possible to return items early if you reach your checkout limit or if you have finished early and want to make items available to other users.

  • To renew a title, select the Renew button on your Loans page. This option appears below the title three days before it’s due.

If the title has holds on it, you won’t be able to renew it. Instead, you can select the Request Again button to place a hold on the title and borrow it again when it’s available.
