Frequently Asked Questions: Volunteering at the Library

1. I have completed the volunteer application form. What happens next?

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the library! Once your application has been submitted, please wait for an email from a librarian with information about the next available volunteer orientation session. Rest assured that all completed applications are received and reviewed through our system.

2. I’m interested in volunteering for both Reading Buddies and Math Buddies. Can I do both?

We encourage you to attend a volunteer orientation session first. After learning more about each opportunity, you can decide which program(s) you would like to participate in. Please note that all volunteers must complete an orientation before beginning any volunteer activities at the library.

3. How do Reading Buddies and Math Buddies work?

Reading Buddies and Math Buddies are 10-week volunteer programs where high school volunteers are paired with a younger buddy. Volunteers meet with their buddy at the library once a week to support reading skills, math practice, and learning goals.

4. Can I earn additional volunteer hours?

Yes! Once you have completed volunteer orientation, you are welcome to apply for other volunteer opportunities available at the library. You may earn additional hours as long as you follow all volunteer guidelines and requirements discussed during orientation.

5. What does the schedule look like for Reading Buddies and Math Buddies?

After completing orientation, volunteers will be paired with a child. Volunteers and their buddies will coordinate a mutually convenient schedule. Volunteers are encouraged to meet once a week at the library to complete the 10-week program requirements.

6. Who can volunteer at the library?

The library accepts student volunteers in Grades 9 to 12 who are completing their school community involvement hours.

If you are an adult or no longer a high school student and would like to volunteer, please complete the adult volunteer application form, and our Events Coordinator will contact you with available opportunities.

7. What is volunteer orientation?

Volunteer orientation is the first step in becoming a library volunteer. During this session, you will learn about volunteer expectations, how to record your hours, available opportunities, and important guidelines for volunteering at the library.

8. Can I skip orientation if I am unavailable on the scheduled date?

Volunteer orientations are offered on an ongoing basis. If you are unable to attend your scheduled orientation session, please contact us at ya@aurorapl.ca so we can provide information about the next available session.

9. Can I know the orientation dates in advance?

Orientation dates are scheduled based on the number of completed applications received. Due to the high volume of student volunteer applications, orientation sessions are organized regularly to ensure all volunteers receive the information and support they need before starting.

10. When should I submit my volunteer form for signatures?

We recommend submitting your volunteer form for completion after you have finished all your volunteer hours at the library. If you are planning to continue volunteering and earn additional hours, please keep your form until you have completed all your volunteer activities.
