Everyone loves LEGO. There is no denying that it is one of the most important and imaginative toys ever made. What started as a humble construction toy has boomed into a billion-dollar property, and with good reason -- it's fun! LEGO has also partnered with so many intellectual properties over the years, such as DC, Marvel, and Star Wars. It also has success with its own original ideas as well, such as LEGO City, Ninjago, and Friends. So why are we chatting about LEGO this month? Because outside of the cool building toys that they are, they have also been turned into some of the most creative video games as well! I'm here to share why you should play the LEGO video games with your kids!
- They are creative: Much like the toys they borrow from, many of the LEGO video games offer very creative concepts for adults and kids to engage with. LEGO Worlds offers freeform creation similar to Minecraft, while LEGO DC Villains places players in the roles of characters like the Joker, Clayface, and Lex Luthor. While I don't encourage you to take candy from a baby in real life, in LEGO DC Villains it's a cheeky moment added for anyone who is roaming around LEGO Gotham City as the Joker. From riding dinosaurs in LEGO Jurassic World to smashing robo-dinosaurs and having dance parties in LEGO Horizon Adventures, there is a lot to discover in a LEGO game.
- They are simple: The LEGO video games are great beginner-friendly video games, as they do not offer a lot of gameplay mechanics to keep track of. In most games, characters have a unique ability, can jump, and build. Sometimes, depending on the level, you may need to swap to a different character to use their ability to solve a puzzle.
- They teach problem-solving: One of the most important benefits of LEGO and its video games is that it teaches problem-solving. Your design feels like it's missing something? Problem-solve it! There's a puzzle that requires the use of a specific character? Problem-solve it! LEGO is a fantastic teaching tool, and particularly in video games, it wants players to think outside of the box to solve a problem so that they can progress in a level. Creative thinking is so important and valuable, and it's a great way to encourage kids to try, fail, and try again.
- They are amazing to play as a family: One of my favourite things about LEGO is that it can be a family activity, and the video games are equally awesome for this. My best friend and I love to play these games together because it gives us a chance to work together, problem-solve, and be a little silly. There is so much communication and laughter playing these games that it's easy to lose time enjoying the moment.
- They are joy from start to end: If there is one thing about the LEGO games I adore, it's that they are both hilarious and wholesome. Did Errond get his donuts in LEGO Horizon Adventures? Can poor Obi-Wan open his lightsaber in Star Wars? Will Benny from the LEGO Movie video game get his spaceship? Why is LEGO City Undercover one of the most hilarious games of all time? These games are simply pure joy in a tightly crafted package. Laughter is always the best medicine, and the LEGO games truly are funny for all ages.
